I was never that excited about making waffles for breakfast until the simple sourdough waffles recipe was introduced to me!
These waffles are a staple breakfast food in our house and so easy, even the kids have no issues whipping it up on their own! With just a few simple ingredients and some sourdough starter handy, you can have breakfast for the whole family in less than 30 minutes!
The Simple Homemade Sourdough Waffles
These waffles are super fluffy and have a nice outer crisp to them as well. If you like the flavor that sourdough gives and the texture of waffles, you are going to LOVE these!
They are so quick and easy to mix up. Just combine all the ingredients, get the batter on the waffle iron, then cook them up and enjoy!
SIMPLE AS THAT!
The Simple Homemade Sourdough Waffles Ingredients
Any type of starter is perfect for this recipe as well. It does not matter if it is discard or from a mature, active starter. I personally love to feed my starter with spelt before making waffles as it adds an extra delicious element to the finished product.
- Sourdough starter
- Butter
- Sugar (or sweetener of choice)
- Eggs
- Baking Soda
- Salt
- Vanilla (we make our own homemade vanilla that we LOVE)
- Cinnamon (I always add a little extra)
How to Make the Waffles
The recipe can be adjusted based on how much you need. For our family, that includes four growing boys, we like making a larger batch. Even if you have extra, the waffles hold up well covered for a few days in the fridge or for a few months in the freezer.
Here Are the Steps:
1. Take your sourdough starter and add it to a large mixing bowl.

2. Add melted butter, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, and salt. Mix together.

3. Add in the baking soda and vanilla and mix them into the batter.

4. The batter should be about the same consistency of a pancake batter and should look all BUBBLY.

5. Pour the proper amount of batter onto your waffle iron and cook them up.
6. Enjoy your simple sourdough waffles with some syrup and fruit or whatever you choose!
